Western Australia has a new pest and it's been found near Kununurra in the Kimberley. It's called the American serpentine leafminer. The invasive pest eats all sorts of things including most vegetable and legume crops, as well as cut flowers.
State agriculture minister Alannah MacTiernan is calling on the Federal Government to allow skilled overseas grain harvest workers to quarantine on Christmas Island and then help get the crop off. The minister says the federally run facility is the perfect spot to quarantine as many as 1, 000 fully vaccinated skilled machinery operators from the northern hemisphere. Alannah MacTiernan says other suggestions, such as hotel or on-farm quarantine, are not an option.
Federal agriculture minister David Littleproud says he hasn't seen a Christmas Island quarantine proposal from WA. If he receives one it will assessed just like the proposals from other states.
